Have Asthmatic Children? Avoid Toxic Cleaners

Ok, so I go to my nieces' house because her young [under 10] daughter is in Children's Hospital on 6L of oxygen [O2 levels fluctuating from 80+ to 90%], for the past two days suffering with panic attacks from dyspnea AND asthma AND pneumonia, and find my sister cleaning the bathroom with toxic cleaners... Yes products with the 'B' word.

FYI: Asthma rates in children under the age of five have increased more than 160%. An average of one out of every 13 school-aged children has asthma. These are alarming statistics. Wake up people, these toxic cleaners are hurting us.

FYI: Over 90% of poison exposures happen at home. Common bleach is the #1 household chemical involved in poisoning. Organic pollutants, found in many common cleaners and even air fresheners, are 2 to 5 times higher inside the home than out.

A person who spends 15 minutes cleaning scale off shower walls could inhale three times the “acute one-hour exposure limit” for glycol ether-containing products set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

And it's such a shame, but you really only need two or three cleaners to do all the jobs in the kitchen and bathroom...Shaklee Basic H2 and Basic G Germicide.

Children are highly vulnerable to chemical toxicants. They drink more water, eat more food, and breathe more air, pound for pound, than adults. The concern here is that children will have a much heavier exposure than adults to any toxins that are present in our water, our food or our air.

What are you and your children breathing???

Learn about the damage that can be done from the products you may be using.I recommend this website: http://www.householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/ingredients.htm.

The POWER of PROTEIN!

The Power of Protein Shaklee Health Sciences Bulletin October 2009

It’s essential to the growth, repair, and maintenance of all body tissues. It’s also required for making enzymes - catalysts essential to all life processes, and hormones - powerful chemical messengers that circulate through your bloodstream to specific target cells, where they generate a wide range of biological responses. It also helps your body maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, provides a source of energy, and helps your body fight off disease. These are the powers of protein!

These powers are made possible by consuming adequate amounts of dietary protein from a variety of lean meats, fish, and poultry, as well as soy and milk, which supply the body with amino acids, the basic building blocks from which the body can make its own body proteins.

Not All Protein Is Created Equal: Foods provide about 20 different amino acids, of which more than half are considered to be “nonessential.” In other words, the body can make them for itself. However, nine other amino acids are considered “essential,” meaning the body is unable to make them on its own. And unlike the carbohydrates and fats we consume, amino acids are not stored in the body. Therefore, the body must rely on a constant and steady supply from the protein-rich foods we eat every day.

So what are the best sources of dietary protein? And is there a difference between animal and vegetable sources? Well, it’s true that not all dietary protein is created equal. It really is the protein quality of one’s diet that, in large part, determines how well a child will grow and develop and how well an adult will maintain his or her health. Put simply, high-quality proteins provide enough of all the essential amino acids needed to support the body’s work, and lower-quality proteins don’t. Two key factors that influence protein quality are the protein’s digestibility and its amino acid composition. Protein digestibility is a measure of the amount of amino acids absorbed from a given protein intake, and amino acid composition refers to the simultaneous availability of all the needed amino acids from a food we choose to eat. In general, animal-sourced proteins (meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy) are considered high-quality proteins, as is soy, a vegetable-sourced protein. However, other vegetable proteins tend to be of much lower quality and are often referred to as “incomplete” proteins because they do not provide all the essential amino acids the body needs. Incomplete proteins can come from fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts.

Health Benefits: When most of us think about the health benefits of dietary protein, its role in bodybuilding comes to mind—and rightly so. No new body tissue can be built without it. However, research also suggests that the intake of high-quality protein in the context of an overall healthful diet may also have positive effects on our body weight and body composition as we age, as well as play a role in the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, certain types of cancer, and osteoporosis.

Weight Management: Studies have shown that achieving a healthy weight and maintaining that weight can help add years to your life, and scientists believe that dietary protein may play an important role in weight management. High-protein diets may promote significantly more weight loss compared to lower protein diets because of protein’s role in promoting satiety. In a fairly recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers studied the effects of increasing dietary protein while maintaining carbohydrate content on weight loss, appetite, calorie intake, and fat mass in a small group of study participants. Initially, participants were instructed to follow a weight-maintaining diet (50% carbohydrate, 15% protein, 35% fat) for two weeks. Then for the following two weeks, they were asked to follow a diet providing the same amount of calories but with 50% of calories coming from carbohydrate, 30% from protein, and 20% from fat. Two weeks later, they were given an ad libitum diet of 50% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 20% fat to follow for an additional 12 weeks. Even though subjects could eat as much food as they wanted in those 12 weeks, they actually reduced their calorie intake by an average of 441 calories per day. They also lost an average of 10.8 pounds in body weight and 8.2 pounds of body fat.

Age-Related Muscle Loss: After about age 40, most adults will lose anywhere between 0.5% and 1% of their skeletal muscle mass each year. And in the early years, this gradual loss may go unnoticed because it might be masked by a concurrent increase in body fat. However, chronic muscle loss—or what is known as sarcopenia—is estimated to affect about 30% of people over age 60 and may affect more than 50% of those over age 80. Insufficient protein intake in older adults can contribute to a loss of muscle, and although the optimal amount of protein to prevent or offset the progression of sarcopenia has yet to be established, research findings suggest that protein intakes modestly above the present recommended dietary allowance of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (i.e. 1 gram per kilogram of body weight per day or higher) enhance muscle mass in older adults who regularly perform resistance exercise.

Protein intake in older adults also appears to have a more beneficial effect when consumed within an hour or so of resistance exercise. Emerging research also suggests that dairy protein, especially whey protein, may minimize sarcopenia because of its high concentration of leucine, an amino acid known to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. For example, findings in older adults suggest that increasing leucine intake may help restore the protein synthesis response to protein-containing meals, which has been shown to diminish with age.

Cardiovascular Disease: One concern that has been raised about the trend in high-protein diets for weight loss has been that eating diets high in protein and fat, and low in carbohydrate, would harm the heart. However, recent research findings suggest that if done in a healthy way, eating a little more protein, especially vegetable protein, while cutting back on refined carbohydrates may actually benefit the heart. A 20-year prospective study of 82,802 women found that those who ate low-carbohydrate diets high in vegetable sources of fat or protein had a 30% lower risk of heart disease, compared to women who ate high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets. But women who ate low-carbohydrate diets that were high in animal fats or proteins did not have a reduced risk of heart disease.

Cancer: There’s no good evidence that eating a little protein or a lot of it significantly influences cancer risk. However, eating a lot of red meat (cured and processed meats, in particular) has been linked to an increased risk of colon cancer. There also has been considerable investigation of the potential of soy-protein-containing foods to reduce the risk of cancer, especially breast cancer. In a fairly recent review of studies based on Asian populations, higher soy intake was associated with an overall 29% decreased risk of breast cancer.

Despite these positive findings, the relationship between soy foods and breast cancer risk has been controversial because of data gathered from cell culture and animal studies that suggest isoflavones (the plant-estrogen-like compounds in soy foods) stimulate the growth of estrogen-sensitive breast cancer cells. This has led to questions about the safety of soy consumption in women with a history of breast cancer or women at high risk for the disease. Research continues in this area, but it’s important to point out that several lines of existing evidence suggest that women with breast cancer can safely consume soy.

First, human studies have shown that isoflavones do not stimulate breast cell proliferation or increase breast tissue density (two markers of increased cancer risk), and a lack of harmful effects have been noted in several clinical studies examining the impact of soy food intake on the prognosis of breast cancer patients.

In one study, neither soy nor isoflavone intake was related to the disease-free survival rate of breast cancer patients over a five-year follow-up period, and in a second study, higher soy intake was associated with a more favorable outcome for both total mortality and disease-specific mortality or relapse during a follow up period of two years. And even better news is that the benefit of soy food intake on survival was more pronounced among women with estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer. Although these studies are encouraging, breast cancer remains a very serious health condition. Women with a history of breast cancer should seek the advice of their doctor concerning the consumption of soy foods as part of an overall healthful diet.

Osteoporosis: Prevention of osteoporosis is a public health priority and among nutritional factors, most attention has focused on the beneficial role of calcium. However, in addition to calcium, many other nutrients are necessary for bone health, including protein. Findings from many, but not all, epidemiological studies point to a beneficial role for dietary protein in bone health. High-protein intakes have been associated with reduced bone loss, high bone-mineral density, and reduced fracture risk in older adults. In a recent trial, increasing protein intake, especially when accompanied by calcium and vitamin D, reduced bone loss, improved muscle strength, and shortened the hospital stay in older patients with hip fractures whose usual intake of dietary protein was low.

On the other hand, some studies suggest that excessive dietary protein intake may have detrimental effects on bone because of its effect on urinary calcium excretion. This controversy may be explained by other nutrients in food or the source of dietary protein. For example, dietary protein has been shown to exert a positive effect on the skeleton of older adults when calcium intake is adequate, but not when calcium intake is low.

Because protein exists in close association with other nutrients in the diet, it is important to consider protein’s role in bone health in the context of foods or the overall dietary pattern. A number of studies have demonstrated that intake of milk and other dairy products benefits bone health. Dairy products such as milk are a unique source of protein because their calcium content is high relative to their protein content and they contain other bone-supporting nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, and vitamins A, D, and K.

How Much Protein Is Enough? Although no one-size-fits-all answer exists for that question and research on the topic is still emerging, the current recommended dietary allowance for protein is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day for healthy young adults. That comes to about 62 grams of protein a day for a person who weighs 170 pounds. Although growing children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and older adults may need a little more (1.0–1.3 grams per kilogram of body weight), getting the minimum daily requirement of protein is fairly easy. Cereal with milk for breakfast, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch, and a piece of fish with a side of beans for dinner adds up to about 70 grams of protein.

It’s also important to pay attention to what comes along with the protein in your food choices. An eight-ounce broiled porterhouse steak is a great source of complete protein—54 grams worth. But it also delivers 44 grams of fat, 16 of which are saturated. Saturated fats raise blood cholesterol, and high blood cholesterol increases the risk of heart disease. On the other hand, a cup of cooked lentils has 18 grams of protein, but less than one gram of fat.

Vegetable sources of protein, including soy protein beverage mixes, are also an excellent choice and many also provide healthful amounts of other essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The best animal protein choices are fish and poultry. If you are partial to red meat, such as beef, pork, or lamb, stick with the leanest cuts, choose moderate portion sizes, and make it only an occasional part of your diet.

Resveratrol: Can You Really Extend Your Life Span with this Antioxidant?

Can You Really Extend Your Life Span with this Antioxidant?
Dr. Mercola September 29 2009

In 2003, research showed that resveratrol, a powerful polyphenol and anti-fungal chemical, was able to increase the lifespan of yeast cells. The results ignited flames of hope for an anti-aging pill. According to the findings, resveratrol could activate a gene called sirtuin1, which is also activated during calorie restriction in various species.

Since then studies in nematode worms, fruit flies, fish, and mice have linked resveratrol to longer lives. Other studies with only resveratrol have reported anti-cancer effects, anti-inflammatory effects, cardiovascular benefits, anti-diabetes potential, energy endurance enhancement, and protection against Alzheimer’s. Resveratrol is found in grapes and red wine, and has particularly been associated with the so-called 'French Paradox' -- the low incidence of heart disease and obesity among the French, despite their relatively high-calorie diet and levels of wine consumption

If you want to stay healthy and extend your lifespan, eating right, exercising, optimizing your vitamin D levels and addressing emotional challenges at their root cause would be a great place to start.

But assuming you are already leading a healthy lifestyle, resveratrol, a potent antioxidant found in certain fruits, vegetables and cocoa, may be worth looking into.

Resveratrol is unique among antioxidants because it can cross the blood-brain barrier to help protect your brain and nervous system, and studies show that its benefits are wide reaching, including:
Protecting your cells from free radical damage
Inhibiting the spread of cancer, especially prostate cancer
Lowering your blood pressure
Keeping your heart healthy and improving elasticity in your blood vessels
Normalizing your anti-inflammatory response
Helping to prevent Alzheimer’s disease

Because resveratrol appears to be so effective at warding off many diseases associated with aging, it is often referred to as a “fountain of youth” that can extend lifespan.

Promising Studies Show Resveratrol’s Anti-Aging Effects
Animal studies have shown that resveratrol helped overweight mice run farther and live about 20 percent longer. It has even been found to increase the lifespan of human cells.
Further, in a study published in the journal Nature, scientists fed one group of mice a high-fat diet consisting of 60 percent fat calories. The mice developed signs of incipient diabetes, and began dying early deaths.

A second group of mice was fed an identical diet, but were also given large daily doses of resveratrol (the equivalent, for a human, of the amount that would be found in 750 to 1,500 bottles of red wine).

The mice did put on weight, but they avoided the enlarged livers and high blood glucose and insulin that signal diabetes. The resveratrol-fed mice also lived as long as mice on a healthy diet.
Aside from these benefits, a new study revealed that resveratrol stops inflammation with a one-two punch that prevents your body from creating two different molecules known to trigger inflammation -- sphingosine kinase and phospholipase D.

While inflammation is a natural response in your body (it’s a process in which your body’s white blood cells protect you from outside invaders such as bacteria and viruses), it’s possible for your body to exist in a chronically inflamed state.

Chronic inflammation is not a beneficial bodily response, and in fact has been linked to numerous chronic diseases including heart disease.

Further, Sirtris Pharmaceuticals has already developed a resveratrol pill that was used in a trial on people with untreated diabetes. The results? Lowered glucose and insulin levels without any changes in diet or taking other drugs.

Should You Take Resveratrol to Extend Your Lifespan?
It’s interesting to note that GlaxoSmithKline recently purchased Sirtris for nearly three quarters of a billion dollars.

Why? Because Sirtris is hard at work developing an anti-aging resveratrol pill, and if they’re able to develop a drug that could slow down all diseases, it would be an FDA-approvable blockbuster of unprecedented scope. I would venture to say that scientists are hard at work on this as we speak.

Resveratrol’s benefits do look promising. Resveratrol seems to produce many similar benefits as exercise, including lowering insulin levels, which is a key to fighting disease and staying young. I also believe it is the reason why calorie restriction works to extend lifespan.

But would I suggest replacing exercise with resveratrol? No way, though I do suspect it is a powerful addition to exercise, and I personally take resveratrol because of this belief.

If you are interested in trying out some resveratrol for yourself, there are numerous products already on the market. Be sure to look for one made from muscadine grapes that uses WHOLE grape skins and seeds, as this is where many of the benefits are concentrated.

Proper Nutrition for Infants & Toddlers.

Listed here are a few good reasons why your baby needs proper nutrition [good, healthy, and natural reasons] and why your should give your baby Shaklee's baby vitamins:
~Vitamins help in the development in your baby's immune system.--When babies are first born, their immune systems are not as strong as they need to be. With the proper vitamins your baby's immune system can combat many viruses. Nutrients such as vitamins A, C, and E, as well as zinc, copper, and selenium, all contribute to a healthy immune system.
~Healthy Bones and Teeth--Along with calcium and magnesium, vitamin D is crucial for strong bones and teeth. Recently the American Academy of Pediatrics increased its recommended daily intake requirement of vitamin D from 200 IU to 400 IU for infants and toddlers. Vitamins are essential in the early growth and development of your baby's brain [before and after birth].
~Brain Health --Nutrients such as iron, zinc, copper, folic acid, selenium, and vitamin A have significant roles in brain development.
~Lactoferrin--A unique, biologically active milk protein. Also found naturally in breast milk, it is believed to provide one of the immuno-protective effects associated with breast-feeding. Lactoferrin has been shown to act as a prebiotic–it fuels the growth of beneficial microflora, which in turn supports digestive health. Studies also indicate lactoferrin activates other components of the immune system.
~Digestive Health--Infants who were fed prebiotics in baby food or infant formula have been found to have higher levels of bifidobacteria in their intestines, which in turn help support a strong immune system.

Also essential for good health is knowing what your baby may be exposed to in his/her environment. Keep your child safe with Shaklee non-toxic cleaning products and baby care products.

Popcorn May Help Prevent Cancer

Eating popcorn is good for you and may even help prevent cancer.

Scientists have long known that whole grains are heart-healthy, but a first-of-its-kind study from the University of Scranton found that popcorn, breakfast cereals, and other grain-based snack foods are packed with antioxidants called polyphenols.

Polyphenols in foods such as fruits, vegetables, wine, coffee, tea, berries, olives, and chocolate are thought to help reduce the risk of many diseases. They remove free radicals — the chemicals that can cause damage to cells and tissues — from the body.

Until now, no one knew that commercial cold and hot whole-wheat cereals and snack foods also were a good source of polyphenols. This is important for health because the average American diet consists of a high percentage of these foods.

“Cereals, pasta, crackers and salty snacks constitute over 66 percent of whole grain intake in the U.S.” said Joe Vinson, a chemistry professor at the University of Scranton. “Early researchers thought the fiber was the active ingredient for these benefits in whole grains — the reason why they may reduce the risk of cancer and coronary artery disease,” he said. “But recently, polyphenols emerged as potentially more important.”

“This is the first study to examine total phenol antioxidants in breakfast cereals and snacks,” Vinson said. “We found that, in fact, whole-grain products have comparable antioxidants per gram to fruits and vegetables.”

The study found that whole grains are very high in antioxidants, with the most antioxidants in cereals made with wheat, corn, oats, and rice, in descending order. Whole grain snacks have slightly lower levels than cereals.

Popcorn has the highest antioxidant level of all whole grain snack foods — more than five times higher than its nearest rival. Tortilla chips, for example, lagged far behind popcorn, with 10 times less antioxidants than popcorn.

More on Vitamin D...

I subscribe to quite a few newsletter and read more articles than anyone I know, except the person who wrote this article, Bee Wilder, the editor of Healing Naturally. She has 20 years of exploration and research into nutrition and natural healing. I bow to her expertise.

"Vitamin D – Amount of Sun Exposure Required
In order to achieve optimal levels of vitamin D from the sun, all of these factors are important:
~A minimum of 40% of the body surface (skin) needs to be exposed to the sun.
~Exposure must be to prime midday sun (10:00 AM to 2:00 PM) when the UBV rays are strongest; UBV are the kind of sun rays that produce vitamin D on the skin.
~Most people require 800 to 1,200 IU vitamin D minimum daily, in addition to vitamin D found naturally in foods. About 100 to 200 IU of vitamin D is produced for each 5 percent of body surface exposed.
~Light skinned people need 10 to 20 minutes of sun exposure daily, while dark skinned people need 90-120 minutes daily.
~Natural skin oil is critical to the absorption process since vitamin D is only formed on skin that has enough natural oil formed on its surface.
~Chlorine in swimming pools, baths and showers strips away natural oils, and washing with soap removes oils from the skin.

Therefore immediately after washing with soap and/or exposure to chlorinated water, chlorine and soap residue should be removed by applying unrefined coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil all over the skin's surface. That will allow natural oils to be build up on its surface.

It takes about 24 hours for the skin to build up natural oils, so you should plan your sun exposure accordingly. The body needs 24 hours "after proper sun exposure" in order to absorb vitamin D containing oils from the skin surface, so do not use chlorinated water or wash with soap for one (1) day.

These are the reasons I believe it is difficult, to almost impossible, for most people today to get enough vitamin D from sun exposure. Therefore taking cod liver oil is recommended all year, except for those "rare people" who are able to fulfill all of the requirements above." [Bee]

**Cod liver oil is a nutritional supplement derived from liver of cod fish. It has high levels of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, and very high levels of vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin E. It is widely taken to ease the symptoms of arthritis as well as other health benefits.**

Appreciate and Care For Our Children

In this world children are suffering in part from lack of praise and appreciation and positive attention. Think about it--we thank our friends, our clients and strangers, but do we remember to thank/appreciate our children?

Recently I sent a SendOutCards' card to a young man on his 7th birthday--he and his father did a fishing charter and he caught a fish. This picture was taken, and sent to me. I put it, and a couple of others, on a card to memorialize the day, and sent it to him--his grandmother said that he carried it around with him for weeks, but the other gifts were pushed aside or broken within a few days.

Jackson still has that card. I think he keeps it because he felt special and will remember my kindness to him for a long time.

Let's all make an effort to sincerely praise or appreciate or thank a child this week--our future and their futures depend on them being who they are--SPECIAL to US. I believe keeping our children healthy includes many things, quality nutrition, good sleep habits, a strong education and most importantly, helping them feel positive about themselves.

Send a card to someone you love TODAY!

Blessings,
Linda

*Dramatic Autism Statistics

Today we face an ever increasing number of recommended and mandated vaccinations. Let's explore the question together: Do the benefits justify the risks?

Ray Gallup has researched and tracked dramatic autism epidemic statistics:
[] US: 1 in 67 children has Autism [source]
[] US: 1 in 6 children suffers a developmental disorder [source]
[] 84% of children receiving EI services are born in New Jersey [source]
[] UK: 1 in 38 boys has Autism [source]

It costs $3.2 million to take care of an autistic person over his or her lifetime. Caring for all people with autism over their lifetimes costs an estimated $35 billion per year [source]

*Multivitamins Lower Heart Disease Death Risk

Multivitamins taken regularly over a long period of time may lower the risk of death from heart disease by 16 percent, according to a new study at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the University of Washington. The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, also tied daily supplements of vitamin E over a 10-year period to a 28 percent decrease in the risk of death from heart disease.

The new research goes against two older reports, including a much-debated 2004 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine that said multivitamins — and vitamin E in particular — actually increased the risk of “all-cause mortality.” The other previous study, published in 2007 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said vitamin A, vitamin E, and beta-carotene could increase the risk of death by as much as 16 percent.

The new Washington study found that multivitamins did not decrease the risk of causes of death other than heart disease. It also showed that multivitamins and vitamin E were not linked to an increase in cancer deaths, and that vitamins E and C actually were associated with small decreases in the risk of overall mortality.

The researchers based their findings on questionnaires that more than 77,000 Washington State residents between the ages of 50 and 76 completed. The results were correlated with 10-year use of multivitamins and vitamins C and E, and with death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Roughly 35 percent of the U.S. adult population takes multivitamins regularly, according to a recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

But I can't afford food supplements...

I hear this all the time, so I dug through my files and found this from 1996. I wonder what the stats are for 2009???

We spend...
$12,146,000 on potato chips
$506,000,000 on toys
$6,760,000 on cat food
$9,975,000 on dog food [dogs must eat twice as much]
$35,000,000 on Halloween candy for ONE NIGHT

and...

115,000,000 M&M's are sold [not sure if they are small bags]
19,000,000 people eat at McDonalds
28,315,000 hot dogs are eaten
611,000,000 servings of Coca-Cola are consumed

But ONLY $4,315,000 is spent on vitamins!

[from "Food Supplements No Longer an Option" by Dr. Bruce Miller]

Surely somewhere in our spending there is room for Shaklee Vitalizer.
Healthier living for about $2.90 a day.
Certainly Food For Thought...

Artificial Sweetners

Buyer Be Aware: Splenda® (Sucralose)
New Research Shows There’s No Free Lunch When it Comes to Artificial Sweeteners

When summer rolls around it’s tempting to use food and drink with artificial sweeteners in an attempt to cut down on calories, but no research has ever convincingly shown that using these products contributes to weight loss. In fact, recent research suggests that they may actually confuse the body’s response to sweet tastes and contribute to weight gain.

The artificial sweetener sucralose (brand name Splenda®) is increasingly found in processed foods. Sucralose is sugar with its chemical structure changed to create a chlorocarbon, or a sugar with chlorine added. This causes it to pass through the body largely unabsorbed, which means that it doesn’t add calories. Splenda® is FDA-approved for use in food, and is widely found in processed foods and drinks, from yogurt and iced tea, to cookies and chewing gum.

Splenda® can be Gut Wrenching
Research suggests that Splenda® may be doing damage as it passes through the intestines. According to an article in Dr. David William’s newsletter Alternatives, research with rats has shown that “…Splenda® can reduce the amount of beneficial bacteria in the intestines by as much as 50 percent, increase the pH level in the intestines, increase body weight, and cause the re-routing or inactivation of certain drugs through the alteration of glycoprotein levels.”

Splenda® has Something in Common with Organochlorine Pesticides
There doesn’t seem to be any free lunch when it comes to artificial sweeteners. The sucralose molecular structure resembles the organochlorine pesticides such as DDT, lindane and endosulfan. Although 85 percent or so of sucralose passes through the digestive system without being absorbed, the 15 percent that does get absorbed may be problematic.

According to James Bowen M.D., in an article titled The Lethal Science of Splenda, a Poisonous Chlorocarbon, “Any chlorocarbons not directly excreted from the body intact can cause immense damage to the processes of human metabolism and, eventually, our internal organs. The liver is a detoxification organ which deals with ingested poisons. Chlorocarbons damage the hepatocytes, the liver's metabolic cells, and destroy them.

“In test animals Splenda® produced swollen livers, as do all chlorocarbon poisons, and also calcified the kidneys of test animals in toxicity studies. The brain and nervous system are highly subject to metabolic toxicities and solvency damages by these chemicals. Their high solvency attacks the human nervous system and many other body systems including genetics and the immune function. Thus, chlorocarbon poisoning can cause cancer, birth defects, and immune system destruction. These are well known effects of Dioxin and PCBs which are known deadly chlorocarbons. Just like aspartame, which achieved marketplace approval by the Food and Drug Administration when animal studies clearly demonstrated its toxicity, sucralose also failed in clinical trials with animals. Aspartame created brain tumors in rats. Sucralose has been found to shrink thymus glands (the biological seat of immunity) and produce liver inflammation in rats and mice.”

Why Not Have Some Real Sugar!Americans have become habituated to the intensely sweet taste of artificial sweeteners and it’s long past time to kick that habit. If you have a yearning for something sweet, why not just have some real sugar! It’s natural, it doesn’t take much to sweeten up food and drink, and it hits the pleasure centers of the brain, which the artificial sweeteners do not. Even better, have some fresh fruit, which comes packaged with nutrition and fiber.

VIVIX for Mom

My mother has glaucoma in her left eye. Over the past few months it has been getting worse. On her last visit the doctors told her unless she got the pressure to stay down she would completely lose vision in that eye. Last month when she finally shared this with us, I convinced her to try VIVIX.

Mom had her quarterly exam today, and Praise the Lord, her vision has improved by 4 points--after only 5 weeks of VIVIX.

A Note From Ben Stein???

This came to me through email and please excuse me if this did not really come from Mr. Stein, but I think it is important to share. God Help Us ALL!:

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary.
"My confession: I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are, Christmas trees
It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu .
If people want a creche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away.
I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period.
I have no idea where the concept came from, that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat. Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him?
I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to. In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking.
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Hurricane Katrina).
Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?'
In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school.
The Bible says thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. ?And we said OK. Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave, because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said okay.
Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.'
Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.
Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.
Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.
Are you laughing yet?
Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it.
Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us.Pass it on if you think it has merit.
If not, then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in.
"My Best Regards. Honestly and respectfully,"
Ben Stein

HOME BUSINESS OFFERS REFUGE FROM RECESSION
Local Entrepreneur Enjoys Flexibility and Financial Stability

Downriver, Michigan – June 29th, 2009 – The latest economic indicators for May bring some hopeful tidings, but also some significant concerns. The U.S. unemployment rate is as high as it has been in 25 years, and there is continued concern about sizable job losses to come. The recession has been a source of severe stress for many throughout the country.

According to the recent Multi-Sponsor Surveys’ 2009 Economic Impact Market Segmentation Study, 49% of employed adults expressed worry about potential job loss, while 32% admitted to “significant” financial troubles.

But amid numerous reports of havoc and despair created by the current economic climate, John Pastor Jr., & Linda Vorves Pastor, local small-business entrepreneurs here in Southgate/Wyandotte report a very different experience during this recession.

“If it weren’t for the additional income our health-and-wellness business generates, I think my family would probably be in a very different place,” says Linda Vorves Pastor, a retired licensed nurse, who operates a Shaklee business out of her home.

“Our business helps us not only continue to pay the bills on time, but it also generates additional income which we save to have on hand for unexpected situations, or use when we want to do something special, like take a trip, buy a new car, or remodel the kitchen—things that would otherwise be outside of our budget. Plus we are able to help our eldest son through long-term unemployment issues.”

John and Linda credit their Shaklee home business for helping to alleviate much of their family’s stress and John says, “This business has eased financial concerns while providing flexibility—qualities that can insulate a family from the changing tides of the economy. Most people who run a business from home work only part time, so there’s freedom to plan business activities around the busy schedule of a young family.”

“When I began this business as an independent representative, nearly five years ago,” says Linda, “it was on a very part-time basis. Since I started, I’ve increased the amount of time I spend working with it. Using the Internet and communicating my business online makes my work much more efficient and flexible at the same time, making it possible for me to work on my business pretty much whenever I have downtime from other responsibilities. Plus, it was easy and inexpensive to get started, and there’s no need to make space in our home for any inventory since the company ships directly to my customers.”

Home businesses have drawn considerable interest from people who may be having a difficult time finding employment and from those looking for an income opportunity that also resonates with their personal beliefs—characteristics that most jobs likely do not offer.

“Because we recommend products that help people to be healthier, that help our environment to be cleaner, and for homes to be safer, we feel good about what we do. And because we also offer the chance for other people to do what we’re doing—to achieve independence in a way they may not have thought possible—there’s an incredible feeling of satisfaction in knowing that we can help make a real difference for people looking for extra income right now,” Linda sums it all up.

According to the 2009 Economic Impact Market Segmentation Study, 60% of adults are now interested in operating a home business in response to the economic downturn.

“To me, there’s a great sense of security knowing that my business is backed by a company that has a proven track record and more than 50 years of experience giving people the means to thrive, even during the most difficult economic times,” says Pastor. “Shaklee has grown during each of the prior recessions since it was founded in 1956 and we are proud to work in a Global market.”

How Can You Protect Yourself from Swine Flu?

On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised a worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 in response to the on-going global spread of the influenza A (H1N1) virus.
A Phase 6 designation indicates that a global pandemic is underway.
How worried should you be? Should you panic? Take drastic measures?
I don't know, but if you are not following a good Shaklee nutritional program, you ABSOUTLEY need to reduce your risk of infection. Being proactive in your health gives you substantial protection.
Note: Viruses and bacteria normally don’t usually give advance warnings. But now you have time to make certain adjustments and have a stronger immune system within 2 weeks.
A strong and healthy immune system is more resistant to illnesses. But if you do get sick, your symptoms are not as severe, and your recovery will be faster. Bottom line--prevention is key. Ok, so maybe you are healthy, but how about your 90 year old grandma, or your newborn, or cousin Bill who has asthma?
This new version of swine flu can be dangerous especially for people with respiratory illness or other underlying conditions. What makes this version of swine flu different is that it seems to have picked up genes from bird, swine, and human flu bugs. It’s a type of hybrid.
Swine Flu symptoms are very similar to standard flu symptoms. It takes a standard lab test to confirm Swine Flu (H1N1). Prevention is your best action. A stronger body is more resistant, and a strong body can fight back more effectively if struck with the virus.
(I know all about the Swine Flu, my son Dan had it in 1976, the last time it was in Michigan. He was just 9 months old. He went into a coma, and nearly died. Thanks to prayers, and good medical attention, he lived. We were Blessed.)
Here’s what I suggest you do:
1) Make sure that you are on the Shaklee RX for Life, including Nutriferon. This program has all the basic elements of good prevention. Vivix and Nutriferon both have immune strengthening properties. The protein in the Cinch program builds healthy immune cells also, and the Caroto-E-Omega (CEO) helps keep the membranes inside your nose, mouth and eyes healthier and more resilient to viruses.
You save $90+ each month on this program. Upgrade to Gold Ambassador, and with 2 members of the family on the program, you will get a rebate of at least $50/month on top of the other savings.
Being a Gold Ambassador, may make this tax deductible for you as well.
If you have a large family, make sure that you keep extra Immunity Formula I and Vita-C on hand for them. Rx for Life is preferred, but Vita-lea, Formula I and Vita-C will give a measure of protection as well.
2) Have some Basic H2 and Basic-G in the house. Use them to wash door knobs, sanitize surfaces, and to kill pathogens in the laundry. They are both safe around children and pets. And BasicG is verified to kill some strains of the flu virus, salmonella and 38 other pathogens. Keep BasicG wipes in your car and purse for grocery carts and public bathrooms. Grocery cart handles are especially germy [just think of babies and wet diapers sitting on those carts].
3) Drink 8-8 ounce glasses of water. Your body uses water in part to flush out viruses and bacteria.
4) Get good exercise! Shoot for 8-10,000 steps a day. Exercise strengthens your immune system.
5) Eat over 50% of your diet in raw fruits and vegetables.
6) Do not share your germs. If you are feeling sick, stay home. Swine flu is contagious hours before you have symptoms. Avoid personal contact with someone who is sick. Anyone who knows me knows that I do not shake hands. WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN!, but watch the hand sanitizers, they can be toxic, especially for children.
7) Cut back on sugar. Sugar lowers your immunity by 30%! Use the savings on soda, candy, cookies and junk food to purchase your Shaklee nutrition.
8 ) Keep extra Nutriferon and Shaklee Defend & Resist on hand. As soon as you start to feel sick, start with the Defend & Resist. When you are sick, you can double or triple the Nutriferon you are taking. Get better in 3 days instead of 7.
9) Get an AirSource. It reduces pathogens and molds in your home. If you are a Gold Ambassador, your net cost is as low as $500 and could be tax deductible.
You may think Shaklee is expensive, but what is your life, or your child's life worth? Cheaper brands will not give you the same results. Check out the Landmark study on supplementation if you have doubts.
In addition to strengthening your immune system, and lowering your risk of swine flu, you will also accomplish the following:-sleep better, have a reduction of food cravings, experience better concentration, lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, lose weight, have more energy and vitality, see improvements in your skin, lower risks of all diseases, balance blood sugar, and have fewer doctor’s appointments.
Blessings,
Linda

Dr. Forest C. Shaklee; visionary, entrepreneur, hero.

This is our own, Dr. Shaklee's Story:
Chiropractor. Inventor. Visionary. Entrepreneur. Author. Radio Personality. Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee succeeded in a number of roles during his lifetime. A true original, Dr. Shaklee was and still is an inspiration to thousands and thousands of Shaklee Members worldwide.
Born in Iowa in 1894, Forrest C. Shaklee had tuberculosis as an infant. His parents were told that he would likely suffer a long and horrible death during his childhood. [Little did they know that this sickly child would become a successful chiropractor and business owner and live for more than ninety years!]
In the late 1800s, the only known cure for tuberculosis was good food, fresh air, and lots of rest. As a result, young Forrest spent a lot of time outdoors enjoying and exploring nature and developing a deep respect for the world around him. This respect would inspire him to create his own nutritional product company, The Shaklee Corporation in 1956. He based this company on the Golden Rule.
As a chiropractor, Dr. Shaklee began selling food supplement formulas in 1924 in Iowa. By 1956, he had decided to take his food supplement formulas across North America by way of network marketing with help from his sons Forrest Jr. and Raleigh Shaklee.
In 1960, Dr. Shaklee developed Basic-H®, one of the first biodegradable, all-purpose cleaners. Shaklee now has over 200 products including nutritional supplements, an anti-aging tonic, personal care products, colour cosmetics, water and air treatment systems, and household cleaners.
Dr. Shaklee’s vision for a healthier tomorrow has lead to a half a billion dollars in sales worldwide and offices in a number of countries around the world, including Canada, the United States, Mexico, Malaysia, Taiwan and Japan.

BREAKING RESEARCH SHOWS
VITAMIN D LINKED TO HDL CHOLESTEROL

Shaklee Corporation Research Suggests an Important Role
of Vitamin D for Supporting Cardiovascular Health
PLEASANTON, Calif. – May 19, 2009 – Research supported by Shaklee Corporation, the number one natural nutrition company in the U.S., shows that a lower blood vitamin D level is associated with metabolic syndrome and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The study results were presented at the National Lipid Association Annual Scientific Sessions in Miami, Florida and suggest an important role of vitamin D nutrition for maintaining cardiovascular health.

“I am so proud to be associated with a company whose heritage has always been about improving people’s health and well-being. It’s very exciting that Shaklee has helped to bring this important research to the world, says Independent Shaklee Distributor, Linda Vorves Pastor. “The findings may have significant public health implications related to new understanding about benefits related to vitamin D supplementation,” adds Mrs. Pastor.

In this study, intake of vitamin D from dietary supplements was strongly linked with vitamin D levels in the blood. The greater the intake of vitamin D from dietary supplements, the higher the amount of vitamin D found in the blood. More importantly, as vitamin D intakes increased, HDL cholesterol (or “good cholesterol”) levels increased as well. Future research is needed to determine if vitamin D from dietary supplements can lower risk levels for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

“Our next study, which is already underway, is intended to confirm causality by showing that vitamin D supplementation improves cardiovascular risk factors,” says Dr. Jamie McManus M.D., Chairman of Medical Affairs, Health Sciences and Education, Shaklee Corporation.
Kevin C. Maki, PhD, the study’s Principal Investigator and the Chief Science Officer of Provident Clinical Research, Glen Ellyn, IL, says, “Results from population studies suggest that a low serum vitamin D concentration is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality, but this is the first study to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D status and cardiovascular risk factors in a group that includes a large number of vitamin D supplement users.” He continues, “Additional research is warranted to assess whether increasing vitamin D intake will improve the metabolic cardiovascular risk factor profile.”

UNITY Studio is coming to Allen Park Michigan...very soon.

UNITY represents the birth of a new industry in Michigan. Located on over 100 magnificent acres, UNITY is a self-sustained ‘green’ community of television, film and “New Media” production facilities.

If they are truly 'green' in their actions, I believe that they will need and appreciate our Shaklee products.

Keep an eye on this blog to see what products I believe will be important to a movie studio and their employees--and why.
More later...

Blessings,
Linda

Cancer Relay in June

Hi everyone, John and I are participating in a cancer relay in Wyandotte in June and we need your support and prayers.

We Relay for Dorrie Pastor and Lydia & Jim Cameron and Virginia Lee Vorves and for friends, Sandra Roach and Roger K, and Frank T. Bentley, plus we walk for those in my family and your family who have had cancer. And because I want to see an end to cancer during my lifetime.

Relay gives me the unique opportunity to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission by fighting back against a disease that has already taken too much.

John and I will walk together for this cause. Please pray for us.

Please support our efforts to fight back against cancer by making a donation or joining my Relay For Life® team. We walk with DADBA [the Downriver & Detroit Business Association]. We are expected to raise $200 + towards this cause.

To donate, visit my website: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/lindavorvespastor

Your efforts will help the American Cancer Society fund groundbreaking cancer research, provide up-to-date cancer information, advocate for all people to have access to screening and treatment, and offer free programs and services to improve the quality of life for people facing cancer. By being a part of Relay, we are joining a worldwide movement to help defeat cancer for future generations.

Blessings,
Linda & John Pastor

Do You Have A Plan B?

Many people are rearranging their lives because of the economy and job/work issues. Many are not clear on how they will make enough money to pay their bills. This is tough, but it doesn't need to be impossible.

Might I suggest you watch this video and see what a Michigan man I know decided last year: http://content.shaklee.com/shaklee/flash/show.php?video=Crawford

Most people do not have 6 weeks to make life-changing decisions. Let me help you start TODAY! www.Shaklee.net/profitandprosperity

What IS Optimal Health?

Optimal Health for you may not be the same as for me.

My body needs are different than yours, they're even different than my childrens' [you might think we'd need the same nutrients since they have my DNA, but no]. Everyone has a different set of requirements.

So... What is optimal?

First of all, optimal health is not normal. What we percieve as normal health is not healthy. Normal is what we are living right now. Normal is catching a cold twice or more a year and taking drugs to mask the symptoms.

Normal is getting the flu. Normal is tired, and cranky and mostly undernourished even though we consume thousands of calories per day. We are not healthy.

I want to be healthy, therefore I want Optimal Health, for myself and my current and my future clients... I want an optimal health that comes from a strong relationship with God, from listening to my body and treating it as the Temple He wants it to be.

I believe the Power that created our bodies, heal our bodies, with the earthly help of people like myself who want to show others how to live an optimally healthy life. I want Homeostasis--a state of internal balance and stability and no disease--hence this blog.

Visit my website to learn more about how I help others gain this good health. www.LindaPastor.com

More to come.

Blessings,
Linda
