Antacids...do they work?

ANTACIDS
by, Dr. Schuyler Lininger, Jr.

If you’ve been to your doctor recently, you may have been surprised to hear him recommend a calcium supplement. Doctors in the past have not been known for their willingness to recommend many vitamins or minerals to their patients. The reason for the prescription is simple: osteoporosis (or loss of bone calcium) is an American epidemic.

Fortunately, then, doctors are recommending calcium supplements; unfortunately, many of them are recommending antacids as the source of calcium. Why is this? The reason is antacids use calcium as one of the main alkalizing agents. If you are one of the many people following the advice of getting your supplemental calcium with an antacid, here is what your antacid tablet may contain besides calcium:

SODIUM (up to 53 mg., used in many - but not all - antacids, not good for you if you have high blood pressure).

MAGNESIUM ALUMINUM SILICATE and DIHYDROXYALUMINUM (aluminum compounds that most nutritional doctors believe may be harmful).

METHYLPARABEN, PROPYLPARABEN AND POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL (three widely used food preservatives).

MINERAL OIL (can coat the digestive tract and impair the absorption of nutrients like Vitamin D.

TALC (probably better used as a powder than as a food).

FLAVORING (not usually defined, which means flavoring can be made up of synthetic chemical compounds).

SUCROSE (plain old table sugar, not good for you if you have either diabetes or hypoglycemia).

CORN STARCH and CORN SYRUP (not good for you if you are allergic to corn products).

FD&C RED #3 (not good for you if you are chemically sensitive - probably not good for you even if you aren't chemically sensitive.

The ingredients listed above are in many of the antacids available in grocery and drug stores. You won't find these products in your health food store because of the variety of nonfood chemicals that accompany the calcium.

But even if you were able to find a chemical-free antacid, would it then be a good source of supplemental calcium as many doctors suggest? My answer would be “no”" and here’s why:

The calcium carbonate contained in antacid tablets ranges from 317 mg 500 mg. per is the mg. per tablet. Unfortunately, calcium carbonate is only 40% calcium; the other 60% is the carbonate carrier. So the actual calcium content ranges from 127 mg. to 200 per tablet.

The conservative adult recommended allowance for calcium is 1,000 mg. If you want to get the RDA for calcium using antacids, you need to take between 5 and 8 tablets a day. Since the per tablet cost of antacids in 100 count jars is about 25 cents, your daily cost of taking 5-8 tablets ranges from $1.25 to $2.00. The cost of a 1,000 mg. calcium supplements in your health food store is only 12-14cents per day. It doesn’t look as if supplements in your health food store are overpriced after all, does it?

For the sake of argument, let’s imagine an antacid that contained no harmful chemicals and that wasn’t overpriced as a calcium supplement. If such antacid existed, would that be a good source of supplemental calcium? Unfortunately, the answer would still have to be “no” - and here’s why.

Aluminum compounds have received a great deal of publicity in recent years due to the association of aluminum in the brain and Alzheimer’s disease. It has been proven the aluminum in antacids is absorbed from the intestine. Furthermore, aluminum containing antacids have been shown to interfere with normal mineral metabolism.

Observations have linked prolonged aluminum-containing antacid use with severe bone pain and fractures. In fact, some doctors have gone so far as to suggest such antacids cause bone-loss and their use should be considered one of the causative factors whenever there is bone disease of unknown origin. These conclusions are certainly at odds with those who recommended antacids as a calcium supplement!

A key factor in protein digestion and some mineral absorption (including calcium absorption) is an adequate supply of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach.

Since the function of antacid tablets is to reduce stomach acidity, antacids will reduce stomach acidity. Antacids will reduce rather than increase, calcium absorption. This fact alone should concern you, but if it doesn’t, remember why people often need to spell “relief” from acid stomach in the first place.

Stomach acid is very strong, it is strong enough to dissolve metal. One of my favorite stories demonstrating the strength of HCl involves a schizophrenic who swallowed a razor blade wrapped inside some bread (mentally ill people often swallow foreign objects). After eight days, an endoscopy was performed to remove the razor blade. Only corroded and crumbling fragments were recovered; the HCl had eaten completely through the razor blade.

Frequently when stomach HCl is in short supply, the symptom is heartburn. With low HCl, people usually cannot tolerate fried or spicy foods. Some cannot even handle eggs, butter, milk, meat or cheese. These are the same symptoms that antacids are prescribed for. Other symptoms include a feeling of fullness after eating, belching, constipation, diarrhea, and flatulence (gas). Why does HCl cause such symptoms and why do antacids relieve the symptoms?

If HCl is low, the stomach holds the food longer. (This is why one symptom of low HCl is a feeling of fullness after a meal.) Whatever HCl is present mixes in with the food. The stomach churns and instead of emptying its contents into the small intestine, some food regurgitates into the esophagus. Since the throat is not protected against acid with the same mucosal barrier of the
stomach, the throat gets burned. This burning is called “heartburn.” By treating this heartburn with antacids, the burning stops - but all the problems documented above can occur.

It makes you wonder, doesn’t it? If antacids aren’t good as a calcium supplement and they aren’t good for heartburn - what are they good for?

The Truth about Soy and Breast Cancer

The truth about Soy and Breast Cancer

Soy is a phytoestrogen and decreases cancer stimulation
1.fills bloodstream with phytoestrogens that are much weaker than the body’s own homemade estrogen (1/1000th in strength)
2.binds to receptor sites on the cells where steroid estrogen would normally bind
3.phytoestrogens block steroid estrogens from binding – antagonists
a.also protective
4.prevents strong stimulation of cancer cells
a.own estrogen feeds breast cancer in some cases
b.your body is going to continue to produce estrogen
5.less stimulus would also slog down growth of cancer cells
6.soy builds the immune system

What to look for in a soy protein:
1.organically grown
2.water processed – not alcholol processed
3.all 9 amino acids are present in product
4.low heat used – heating destroys amino acids
5.anti-thyroid and anti-growth substances removed
6.calcium is added – when remove oil from soy the product becomes acidic – you want it neutral and calcium does that

Shaklee Energizing Soy Protein meets all these criteria

Fish Oil FIghts Colon Cancer

Fish Oil Compound Fights Colon Cancer
May 25, 1999

ORLANDO (Reuters Health) -- The omega-3-fatty acids found in some fish oils
appear to inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells in laboratory studies,
researchers report.

"The growth inhibitory effect was most prominent in rapidly proliferating
(cancer) cells," according to graduate student Angela Jordan and colleagues
at J.W. Goethe University, in Frankfurt, Germany. Jordan presented the
findings at the recent Digestive Disease Week conference of digestive tract
specialists, held in Orlando.

In an interview with Reuters Health, the researcher explained that
omega-3-fatty acids, the main active ingredient in fish oil supplements, have
already shown anticancer potential in malignancies of the breast, pancreas,
and prostate.

In their latest study, the German team introduced two types of human cancer
cells (Caco-2 and COLO-320) to an omega-3-fatty acid emulsion under
laboratory conditions.

According to Jordan, "the omega-3-fatty acids inhibit(ed) the growth of colon
cancer cells." They seemed especially effective against COLO-320, the most
aggressive of the two cancer cell lines, halting all growth within 72 hours
of exposure to the compound. This inhibitory effect appeared to stem from
"both growth arrest and apoptosis (death of cells)," the authors explain.

If further study confirms these findings, Jordan explained that the emulsion
used in the study may be used as a potential secondary treatment for cancer
patients, delivered as an added ingredient in their IV therapy. She also
believes that daily fish oil supplementation may prove to be beneficial in
healthy individuals who hope to reduce their risks for cancer.

Healthy News Worth Shouting About!

Healthy News Worth Shouting About!
[Here is a truly remarkable story from Nedra Sahr. M.S., C.N.S. about Ruth Barnes. Many thanks to Nedra for her Shaklee leadership and extensive knowledge!]

Ruth Barnes, our dear friend, got a quadruple genetic whammy from her parents and grandparents. Her father died of a heart attack at age 60, and her mother struggled with angina all her adult life. Ruth never knew any grandparents- they all died young of heart disease. Ruth was aware of her genetic risk and has pursued a healthy diet and Shaklee supplement program for years.

Her cardiologists have told her that her pro-active strategies have definitely kept her alive. Four years ago, she had to have 4 stents put in 2 arteries after a triple-by-pass did not work as well as they had hoped. Even after this, Ruth’s ejection fraction measure- the measure of blood pumped out of the ventricles with each heart beat was in the 35% range. Healthy levels are 55-75%. She increased her Omega Guard from 6 to 12 per day. Many of you would say, “Isn’t that dangerous- isn’t she over-dosing”?

Quite the opposite…Her ejection fraction measurement in July of this year was 76%. Her cardiologist was truly impressed and very supportive of her supplement routine.

Ruth gave him even more reason to be impressed this week when she had her cholesterol levels checked. She has been on Cholesterol Reduction Complex since late August. Her LDL cholesterol levels dropped a whopping 14.9% with a 15% increase in the HDL’s. Her cardiologist felt that her HDL increase was the most impressive. He said, “I haven’t seen anyone increase their HDL levels to this degree…ever.” Remember the main function of HDL’s are to soak up excess cholesterol from the walls of the blood vessels and transport them to the liver where they are broken down and then moved to the intestines where they are bound with bile and removed from the body. There is a corollary function of Cholesterol Reduction Complex- it has to do with the LDL cholesterol. Ruth’s LDL levels dropped because the sterols and stanols in the Cholesterol Reduction Complex keep the cholesterol in the intestines so they are bound with bile from the liver and removed from the body. Ruth is so excited she said she’d like to go out on the street and shout the good news. Perhaps we can help!

Do you know someone who has high levels of cholesterol? Would you be willing to speak with them? Whether they are not taking any medications or they are on cholesterol medications, they simply take 2 CR Complex with two meals each day. Then get their results checked in 3 months. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could work with their doctor to reduce their medications after lowering their cholesterol levels? And wouldn’t you feel good knowing you helped someone to better health?

Nedra’s note: Could Ruth have gotten these results with supplements from the drug store or big box store? I think not. Remember the article in our July newsletter that told of an environmental agency suing ten distributors of Omega-3 fish oils because their labels said pure and safe while the contents of the fish oil capsules showed high levels of PCB’s? I’m certain there are other supplement companies who are advertising cholesterol lowering medications as well. Are they safe?

There are supplement companies and then there is Shaklee…350 tests on every new raw ingredient—over 80,000 quality tests a year on our supplements. Who else does this? Check out the Brand X company the next time you consider switching brands. Call the company and ask how many tests their company does on the raw ingredients for their supplements. Then ask if they test during manufacture and again after the product is complete. The company reps may well tell you that is excessive testing. My answer is- it’s not excessive…It’s the Shaklee way of keeping us safe.

Fish oil helps prevent breast cancer

(NaturalNews) The best way to fight breast cancer is to prevent it from ever occurring in the first place, and you can help do that by supplementing with a high quality fish oil, suggests a new study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. According to researchers from the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Wash., current use of fish oil among the population is associated with a 32 percent decreased risk of developing breast cancer.

Theodore Brasky and his team surveyed 35,000 women between the ages of 50 and 76 on their dietary habits, and evaluated the results based on fish oil consumption patterns. Based on a ten-year average of fish oil intake, the team found that women who consume fish oil are at a significantly reduced risk of developing breast cancer than women who do not.

Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which previous studies have already found work to prevent cancer. These nutrients also help to balance out the negative effects of too much omega-6 intake, which research is showing leads to serious disease. You can learn more about fish oil by visiting the NaturalNews fish oil page:
http://www.naturalnews.com/fish_oil...

Preventive medicine is the best medicine, but such medicine comes in the form of quality food and nutritional supplements. While health authorities and cancer groups push women to get mammograms and take preventive breast cancer drugs as a supposed solution, nutrition experts and those aware of the healing power of superfoods advise that women simply eat well and avoid processed food, get plenty of sunshine and vitamin D, and take an omega-3 supplement like high-quality fish oil, among other things.

When choosing a fish oil, it is best to find one that has undergone as little processing as possible, and one that has been tested to be free of harmful contaminants. And if you prefer not to consume animal products, some vegetarians alternatives to fish oil include flax and hemp oils.

Green tea compounds found to help halt leukemia

(NaturalNews) An extract from green tea may slow the progression of the most common form of leukemia, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Mayo Clinic and presented at the annual meeting of the "American Society of Clinical Oncology."

The study was conducted on 42 patients suffering from early-stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Because CLL typically develops slowly with periods of remission, patients are only treated when the disease is actively spreading. None of the study participants were yet undergoing any cancer treatment, including radiation or chemotherapy.

The participants were treated with an extract of epigallocatechin galeate (EGCG), an antioxidant in the catechin family, leading to a significant drop in leukemia cell count in more than two-thirds of participants. In more than one-third of participants, the number of cancerous cells in the blood dropped by a full 20 percent. Additionally, 70 percent of patients who were suffering from enlarged lymph nodes underwent a 50 percent reduction in lymph node size.

"Although only a comparative phase III trial can determine whether EGCG can delay progression of CLL, the benefits we have seen in most CLL patients who use the chemical suggest that it has modest clinical activity and may be useful for stabilizing this form of leukemia, potentially slowing it down," said lead author Tait Shanafelt.

Prior studies have suggested that green tea and its compounds may help fight off cancers of the bladder, colon, esophagus, stomach and pancreas. More recent studies have suggested that it may help fend off tooth decay and aid in weight loss.

Green tea consumption has also been associated with a lowered risk of heart disease, liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis and impaired immune disease. In addition to helping prevent these chronic diseases, green tea may also help slow their progression. Advocates of the beverage also claim that it can help cleanse the body of toxins.

Prevent heart disease with quality multivitamins

(NaturalNews) Taking quality multivitamins is a great way to supplement one's diet with high doses of nutrients that are often lacking in modern-day food. And a new study out of Sweden has found that women who take multivitamins help to reduce their overall risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack.

For ten years, Dr. Susanne Rautiainen and her colleagues from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm monitored 31,671 women with no history of heart disease and 2,262 women with heart disease to observe their progression in overall health. Roughly 60 percent of women from both groups took some kind of dietary supplement.

At the completion of the study, 3.4 percent of the women who had no heart disease to begin with, but who did not take any dietary supplements, ended up having heart attacks. In contrast, only 2.6 percent of women from the same group who did take a multivitamin had heart attacks. Statistically, the multivitamin group exhibited a 27 percent less chance of having a heart attack.

Additionally, women who began the study without heart disease but who had been taking a multivitamin for less than five years had an 18 percent reduced risk of heart disease compared to the non-multivitamin group, while those who had been taking multivitamins for ten years or more had a 41 percent reduced risk of developing the disease.

The study does not explain what type of multivitamins and supplements the women were taking, so it is difficult to ascertain their quality.

Multivitamins made with whole food vitamins are far superior to the synthetic varieties commonly sold at drug stores and big-box retailers, and they work best as part of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle.

John's Journey continues...

John is taking his Cholesterol Reduction Complex as directed now. This formula is a two-part dosage system.

At first, remembering to take them 30 minutes before a meal was a challenge... but then he would also forget to take the second dose.

So now I just set the bottle on the counter and when he goes in the kitchen he is reminded to take the afternoon dose. That was simple. I wish I could set the treadmill on the counter. :)

Blessings & good health,
Linda

John's Journey Away from High Cholesterol

Well, yesterday John began his journey...and he has already taken a side trip backwards.

He is scheduled to eat more veggies and fruit [3 veggies to 1 fruit], take his vitamins and other nutritional supplements and his Cholesterol Reduction Complex. And yesterday he did fairly well with his food choices, and he took his normal supplements--he takes Vitalizer, but he forgot to take his second dose of CRC.

If I remind him, then it will be necessary to continue to remind him, so I'm not going to do that. We'll see how this goes...and see if he remembers tonight when I am not home...

Why YOU Need More B-Vitamins

By Kate Kelland [updated 9/9/2010 7:21:59 AM ET]

LONDON — Daily tablets of large doses of B vitamins can halve the rate of brain shrinkage in elderly people with memory problems and may slow their progression toward dementia, data from a British trial showed on Wednesday,

Scientists from Oxford University said their two-year clinical trial was the largest to date into the effect of B vitamins on so-called "mild cognitive impairment" -- a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Experts commenting on the findings said they were important and called for larger, longer full-scale clinical trials to see if the safety and effectiveness of B vitamins in the prevention of neurodegenerative conditions could be confirmed.

"This is a very dramatic and striking result. It's much more than we could have predicted," said David Smith of Oxford's department of pharmacology, who co-led the trial.

"It is our hope that this simple and safe treatment will delay development of Alzheimer's in many people who suffer from mild memory problems."

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) affects around 16 percent of people aged over 70 worldwide and is characterized by slight problems with memory loss, language or other mental functions.

MCI does not usually interfere with daily life, but around 50 percent of people diagnosed with it go on to develop the far more severe Alzheimer's disease within five years. Alzheimer's is a mind-wasting disease for which there are few treatments and no cure, and which affects 26 million people around the world.

Shaklee: VIVIX vs Mona Vie. NO Competition!

Subject: VIVIX or Mona Vie

Response (Shaklee Field Communications) 08/30/2007 11:17 AM

Shaklee dietary supplement formulations are based on published, peer-reviewed data supporting their efficacy, safety and actual benefit to the consumer by providing guaranteed amounts of health supporting nutrients.

Mona Vie provides no such substantiation, and instead relies on engaging stories and anecdotes to market the product. There is not a single reference to a trial involving Mona Vie showing its benefits.

While the product is purported to provide many nutrients, there are no amounts listed. The only published measure of benefit is the product's ORAC value, which we've seen at various distributor websites at between just over 1,000 to just over 1,100. About 5 ounces of ordinary orange juice or 5 ounces of red grapes would provide roughly the same ORAC value. For comparison, a single serving of Shaklee FlavoMax has an ORAC value of 5,508.

In our opinion, Mona Vie is an expensive way to get the nutrients found in traditional and much less expensive juices like orange, grape, and apple. For the consumer who desires guaranteed amounts of nutrients known to benefit health and prevent chronic diseases, Shaklee supplements are the way to go.

Probiotics--What To Look For...

A good probiotic formula [one with pre- and probiotics] is absolutely essential for long-term intestinal health, and long-term parasite control. When choosing a probiotic, you need to know the following:

~ Not all strains of beneficial bacteria are created equal. For each type of bacteria, there are recognized super strains. Choose a formula that uses only these recognized super strains of beneficial bacteria -- should be clearly identified as such on the label or in the company literature.

~ Then there's the question of how many live microorganisms are alive in that formula when you actually consume it. Pick up any probiotic formula, look at the label, and you'll see something like: "Contains 10-13 billion live organisms per capsule at time of manufacture. " And that's the problem: "at time of manufacture."

~ The die-off rate for probiotics can be astounding. Most formulas experience a die-off approaching log within just 60 days of manufacture. This means that the 10-13 billion you see on the label may be down to 10-13 million, or less, by the time you use it. Heat and moisture accelerate the process, which is why most manufacturers recommend refrigeration for their probiotics.

~ There are many beneficial bacteria that can be contained in a good probiotic, but two are preeminent. Look for a formula based on these:

L. acidophilus resides primarily in the small intestine and produces a number of powerful antimicrobial compounds in the gut (including: acidolin, acidolphilin, lactocidin, and bacteriocin). These compounds may inhibit the growth and toxin producing capabilities of some 23 known disease-causing pathogens (including: campylobacter, listeria, and staphylococci), as well as reduce tumor growth and effectively neutralize or inhibit carcinogenic substances.

~ It's also important to note that L. acidophilus is the primary beneficial bacteria in the vaginal tract. When the presence of the acidophilus is compromised, this allows the bad guys such as Gardnerella vaginalis or E. coli or Chlamydia to take over.

Many researchers believe that declining levels of bifidobacteria in the large intestine actually mark the eventual onset of chronic degenerative disease. Bifidobacteria benefit the body in a number of ways. They: Consume old fecal matter, Have the ability to remove cancer-forming elements (or the enzymes which lead to their formation), and protect against the formation of liver, colon, and mammary gland tumors.

~ The Right Probiotic is the Key to proper digestion. Taking a probiotic supplement is an excellent way to replenish the good bacteria in your intestinal microflora. A quality probiotic product contains two different types of bacteria from " Lactobacillus and normal" Bifidobacteria species.

Probiotics Q&A
Q. How do I know if the probiotic is fresh?
A. First, look for a product that has a “use by” date or an “expiration” date clearly stated on the package, and one that does NOT require refrigeration. Probiotic supplements that require refrigeration often have been subjected to warm temperatures during shipment and storage that will inevitably kill off some or all of the bacteria.

It is very important that the product label guarantees live bacteria at the time of purchase, not at the time of shipment or manufacturing. However, from the laboratory test discussed, we see that sometimes these written guarantees are not worth the paper they are written on. There is one scientifically validated process that truly delivers live and vigorous bacteria to the intestine. This process suspends the probiotic bacteria in a moist paste and immediately seals the bacteria in a perfectly seamless, spherical, gelatin ball. This bacterial paste is completely protected from air and dryness so the bacteria are alive until the specialized gelatin dissolves – in the intestines. [Shaklee uses this process.]

Q. Why is it important to dissolve only in the intestine?
A. Lactic acid bacteria are not very resistant to the acids of the stomach. The harsh environment of the stomach destroys the majority of these bacteria.

This pearly-like coating technology protects bacteria from the stomach acid. The sphere is specially developed to ONLY dissolve in the intestines. Note: An Enteric coating is not enough protection as it does nothing to protect the bacteria while they wait for purchase on the shelf (or on it's journey through the stomach).

Q. What does this proprietary coating technology mean to me?
A. Shaklee's Optiflora Probiotic Complex has a patented triple-layer encapsulation that guarantees delivery of at least half a billion live, beneficial bacteria directly to the small intestines. This specialized process is an expensive processing step, but it has many advantages to you, because the pearl-shaped spheres actually “seal” the bacteria in the capsule. This protects them from air. Probiotic bacteria are anaerobic, meaning they do not require oxygen to live. In fact, the presence of oxygen may actually injure or kill probiotic bacteria.

By protecting the bacteria on the shelf and in the stomach, the probiotic bacteria successfully reach the intestine. As a result, there will be a greater number of healthy, intact bacteria that will colonize in the intestine.

But how do you know the bacteria will still be alive when you make your purchase? Look at the package. If there is no date stamp, don't buy it. If it says the company guarantees there was a certain number alive at the time of manufacture, put it back on the shelf. That means that the company is not willing to claim the bacteria are alive when delivered to the target site, the intestine.

If the product must be constantly refrigerated, put it down. How do you know it didn’t sit in a truck for two or more days, or was stored in a warehouse before it was shipped to the health food store? You don't.

Find a probiotic that says the bacteria are guaranteed to be alive in the numbers stated on the label until the printed on the package. Find a product using unique, cutting edge science to deliver the probiotic bacteria in a form that uses spherical, sealed, triple coating to protect the bacteria. That company has gone to extra time and expense to make sure you reap the benefits that probiotics can offer.

The critical key to a good quality probiotic supplement is that the bacteria must be alive to work. Only living probiotic bacteria can colonize in the intestines. A good quality probiotic nutritional supplement will have GUARANTEED levels of live bacteria at the point of consumption. Inferior brands will merely state levels of live bacteria at the point of manufacture.

We are "not" living longer today - longevity facts from candidasupport@yahoogroups.com

A Letter From Bee--candidasupport@yahoogroups.com:

"Hi everyone,

Excerpts from: Are We Really Living Longer?, Caustic Commentary, WAPF (Weston A. Price Foundation), Spring 2007.
http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/dig20.php

An astute member has sent us some interesting statistics about centenarians [people who are 100 years of age or older].

From a video segment recently aired on Nova [2007 population 306 million], we learn that only one in 10,000 Americans will live to age 100 [0.33% of the total population].

US census data indicates that in 1990, there were an estimated 37,306 centenarians out of 248,709,873 . . . [or 1.5% of the total population].

According to numbers compiled at the University of Virginia, in 1830 there were 2,600 centenarians out of 12,866,020 people, or . . .[or 2.02% of the total population].

Summary by Year:

2007: 0.33% of total population were 100 years of age or more

1990: 1.50% of total population were 100 years of age or more

1830: 2.02% of total population were 100 years of age or more

So much for assurances that this generation will live longer than ever.

The best in health, Bee"

Don't FLUSH Your Old Medications

Years ago we were advised to get rid of old or unused prescription medications by flushing them down the drain [toilet]. But as our population continued to take more meds, and flush those unwanted pills and potions--not to mention our bodily wastes that also contained drug residue--no, they are not used entirely when you ingest/use them--it was discovered that measurable amounts of these substances ARE in our drinking water. Bad News.

It's a fact: Wastewater treatment plants are not always able to remove these residues, and when they enter a septic system they can destroy the 'good' bacteria needed for the system to work properly.

So you have these unused drugs in your medicine cabinet--and you wish to be environmentally friendly--what do you do with them? The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality recommends to ask at your pharmacy if they have a drug take-back program. Visit: michigan.gov/deqreswastecontacts for a list of waste collection or recycling done in your area.

If you can't find a local collection program, throw the meds [whether oral or topical] in the trash, in their original container.

First scratch out your personal information, and then wrap them in plastic bags or plastic containers with lids taped closed. Double-bag them in bags that have a secure closure to prevent leaks.

It is essential to remember that the way these drugs are disposed of may affect our environment as well as our safety. Keep these separate from any trash with food that might attract pets or wildlife.

Any specific questions on your responsibilities in regard to the proper handling of unused drugs in your community should be directed to your pharmacy or city officials.

NOTE: To reduce the use of, or replace the prescription drugs you currently take, incorporate safe, natural nutritional supplements into your diet. Visit: http://www.Shaklee.net/profitandprosperity

Not taking Vitamin K? You Should...

Vitamin K Intake Linked To Decreased Risk Of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
April 26, 2010 by Personal Liberty News Desk

According to a new study recently presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, people who consume a diet rich in vitamin K may have a considerably decreased risk of developing Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

For the study, a research team from the Mayo Clinic recruited 603 newly diagnosed Non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients as well as 1,007 control participants and had them answer food questionnaires regarding their dietary intake two years prior to enrollment in the trial.

Lead investigator James Cerhan and his colleagues found that respondents who had a vitamin K intake in the top quartile of the study had a 45 percent lower risk of being diagnosed with the disease compared to those in the bottom 25 percent. They also discovered that the link remained after accounting for a variety of risk factors, including age, sex, obesity and smoking.

"Whether the protective effect we observed is due to vitamin K intake, or some other dietary or lifestyle exposure, cannot be definitely assessed in this study," said Cerhan. "But these findings add to a lot of other data that support a diet that includes plenty of green leafy vegetables in order to prevent many cancers as well as other diseases."

Manage Type 2 Diabetes With The Help Of QUALITY Nutritional Supplements, Vitamins & Minerals

In the 1980's Nutritional supplements for type 2 diabetes had more than a bit controversial status. That's all changed.

Vitamins and minerals play an important part in a healthy eating plan for everyone, but especially diabetics. Maybe we should be able to get the vitamins and minerals needed each day from our food choices but, for most of us, this is definitely a “hit and miss” process. And people who have type 2 diabetes [especially those who do not follow their diets] need the right combination of vitamins and minerals.

A high potency multi-vitamin should be part of the nutrition plan of those with type 2 diabetics. Congratulations if you think you are getting all the nutrients you need from food, but let's be honest about it, you probably are not, so what's the harm in taking a multivitamin every day? There is none!

Today there are supplements for every condition you can possibly have. However, you most likely don’t need 60-80% of the supplements out there but because of your health challenges a multi-vitamin is one you do need to take--one which contains sufficient amounts of vitamins C, D, E, and B-complex vitamins.

You still need to try to get as many vitamins and minerals as you can from the food you eat. And while food should be the best source, there are a few other minerals, vitamins, essential fatty acids, etc. which you might want to consider getting in supplement form. Like...

Whey or Soy Protein: Whey protein are two of the highest quality proteins available. Bodybuilders know that taking protein will maximize muscle building and repair muscle tissue after intense workouts. Not only can the right protein improve muscle mass, it heightens your immune system and helps keep you on a healthier path.

Omega-3 fatty acids: If you are not getting enough omega-3s from fish [more than 3 servings a week], you may want to try a supplement. These fats actually help to reduce fat in your blood vessels, improve the amounts of good cholesterol you have in your body, and reduce apoproteins, considered to be sensitive indicators of diabetes management.

Chromium: Chromium has been called the diabetes mineral. That’s because it helps glucose enter your cells. Many people who have type 2 diabetes are deficient in chromium. A lack of chromium has also been discovered in people who are obese.

Chromium helps to not only regulate fasting blood sugars and reduce glycosylated hemoglobin and insulin values, it also helps to reduce your cholesterol levels.

The medical community has decided that supplementation is extremely safe for type 2 diabetics, especially when compared to the outcome of developing various diabetic complications because of a lack of one or more of the nutrients listed above.

Not taking proper nourishment will give you a sluggish metabolism.
It is essential to keep your blood sugar steady. Get vitamins and minerals you need for nutritional insurance.

Another Reason We Avoid Splenda...

This was sent to me through a Shaklee associate:

Buyer Be Aware: Splenda® (Sucralose)

New Research Shows There’s No Free Lunch When it Comes to Artificial Sweeteners

When summer rolls around it’s tempting to use food and drink with artificial sweeteners in an attempt to cut down on calories, but no research has ever convincingly shown that using these products contributes to weight loss. In fact, recent research suggests that they may actually confuse the body’s response to sweet tastes and contribute to weight gain.

The artificial sweetener sucralose (brand name Splenda®) is increasingly found in processed foods. Sucralose is sugar with its chemical structure changed to create a chlorocarbon, or a sugar with chlorine added. This causes it to pass through the body largely unabsorbed, which means that it doesn’t add calories. Splenda® is FDA-approved for use in food, and is widely found in processed foods and drinks, from yogurt and iced tea, to cookies and chewing gum.

Splenda® can be Gut Wrenching
Research suggests that Splenda® may be doing damage as it passes through the intestines. According to an article in Dr. David William’s newsletter Alternatives, research with rats has shown that “…Splenda® can reduce the amount of beneficial bacteria in the intestines by as much as 50 percent, increase the pH level in the intestines, increase body weight, and cause the re-routing or inactivation of certain drugs through the alteration of glycoprotein levels.”

Splenda® has Something in Common with Organochlorine Pesticides
There doesn’t seem to be any free lunch when it comes to artificial sweeteners. The sucralose molecular structure resembles the organochlorine pesticides such as DDT, lindane and endosulfan. Although 85 percent or so of sucralose passes through the digestive system without being absorbed, the 15 percent that does get absorbed may be problematic.

According to James Bowen M.D., in an article titled The Lethal Science of Splenda, a Poisonous Chlorocarbon, “Any chlorocarbons not directly excreted from the body intact can cause immense damage to the processes of human metabolism and, eventually, our internal organs. The liver is a detoxification organ which deals with ingested poisons. Chlorocarbons damage the hepatocytes, the liver's metabolic cells, and destroy them.

“In test animals Splenda® produced swollen livers, as do all chlorocarbon poisons, and also calcified the kidneys of test animals in toxicity studies. The brain and nervous system are highly subject to metabolic toxicities and solvency damages by these chemicals. Their high solvency attacks the human nervous system and many other body systems including genetics and the immune function. Thus, chlorocarbon poisoning can cause cancer, birth defects, and immune system destruction. These are well known effects of Dioxin and PCBs which are known deadly chlorocarbons. Just like aspartame, which achieved marketplace approval by the Food and Drug Administration when animal studies clearly demonstrated its toxicity, sucralose also failed in clinical trials with animals. Aspartame created brain tumors in rats. Sucralose has been found to shrink thymus glands (the biological seat of immunity) and produce liver inflammation in rats and mice.”

Why Not Have Some Real Sugar!
Americans have become habituated to the intensely sweet taste of artificial sweeteners and it’s long past time to kick that habit. If you have a yearning for something sweet, why not just have some real sugar! It’s natural, it doesn’t take much to sweeten up food and drink, and it hits the pleasure centers of the brain, which the artificial sweeteners do not. Even better, have some fresh fruit, which comes packaged with nutrition and fiber.

Why We Avoid Splenda...

Splenda (Sucrolose) is an organochloride. This category of chemicals contains some of the most dangerous, carcinogenic toxins known including dioxin ("agent orange") and DDT.

Splenda is made by chlorinating sugar. The sugar is changed enough so that the enzymes in our bodies cannot digest it. So, it still tastes sweet, but your body won't get any calories out of it [or nutrition].

DDT and agent orange are particularly harmful because they are so fat soluble (lipophylic) that they stay in the fat of our bodies for years. If you have ever been exposed to either of these compounds, you probably still have some amount of them in your body. The long-term exposure of your cells to your body accounts for much of the cancer risk.

The best thing you can say about Splenda is that it is water soluble. It will not be presented/remain in your cells for years, normally with very limited usage. However, if someone drinks it/ingests it every day, then this daily exposure might be just as bad as long-term retention within the cells. You might also guess that the place where problems would occur would be the digestive tract (as it may not be absorbed from there absent leaky gut).

My associate googled "Sucrolose" and found the following:

"A new study done at Duke University and published in the Journal of Toxicology
and Environmental Health, Part A has some frightening news about Splenda (sucralose).

According to the study, the use of Splenda:

* Reduces the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50%. which is where most of your immune system resides!
* Increases the pH level in the intestines.
* Contributes to increases in body weight.
* And affects the P! -glycoprotein (P-gp) in the body in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected.

The study, authored by Drs. Mohamed B. Abou-Donia, Eman M. El-Masry, Ali A. Abdel-Rahman, Roger E. McLendon and Susan S. Schiffman, was conducted using male rats over a period of twelve weeks."

It is recommended that any organic chemical that contains chlorine should be consumed with caution. We think this is just asking for a cancer risk.

Blessings,
Linda & John
