Popcorn May Help Prevent Cancer

Eating popcorn is good for you and may even help prevent cancer.

Scientists have long known that whole grains are heart-healthy, but a first-of-its-kind study from the University of Scranton found that popcorn, breakfast cereals, and other grain-based snack foods are packed with antioxidants called polyphenols.

Polyphenols in foods such as fruits, vegetables, wine, coffee, tea, berries, olives, and chocolate are thought to help reduce the risk of many diseases. They remove free radicals — the chemicals that can cause damage to cells and tissues — from the body.

Until now, no one knew that commercial cold and hot whole-wheat cereals and snack foods also were a good source of polyphenols. This is important for health because the average American diet consists of a high percentage of these foods.

“Cereals, pasta, crackers and salty snacks constitute over 66 percent of whole grain intake in the U.S.” said Joe Vinson, a chemistry professor at the University of Scranton. “Early researchers thought the fiber was the active ingredient for these benefits in whole grains — the reason why they may reduce the risk of cancer and coronary artery disease,” he said. “But recently, polyphenols emerged as potentially more important.”

“This is the first study to examine total phenol antioxidants in breakfast cereals and snacks,” Vinson said. “We found that, in fact, whole-grain products have comparable antioxidants per gram to fruits and vegetables.”

The study found that whole grains are very high in antioxidants, with the most antioxidants in cereals made with wheat, corn, oats, and rice, in descending order. Whole grain snacks have slightly lower levels than cereals.

Popcorn has the highest antioxidant level of all whole grain snack foods — more than five times higher than its nearest rival. Tortilla chips, for example, lagged far behind popcorn, with 10 times less antioxidants than popcorn.

More on Vitamin D...

I subscribe to quite a few newsletter and read more articles than anyone I know, except the person who wrote this article, Bee Wilder, the editor of Healing Naturally. She has 20 years of exploration and research into nutrition and natural healing. I bow to her expertise.

"Vitamin D – Amount of Sun Exposure Required
In order to achieve optimal levels of vitamin D from the sun, all of these factors are important:
~A minimum of 40% of the body surface (skin) needs to be exposed to the sun.
~Exposure must be to prime midday sun (10:00 AM to 2:00 PM) when the UBV rays are strongest; UBV are the kind of sun rays that produce vitamin D on the skin.
~Most people require 800 to 1,200 IU vitamin D minimum daily, in addition to vitamin D found naturally in foods. About 100 to 200 IU of vitamin D is produced for each 5 percent of body surface exposed.
~Light skinned people need 10 to 20 minutes of sun exposure daily, while dark skinned people need 90-120 minutes daily.
~Natural skin oil is critical to the absorption process since vitamin D is only formed on skin that has enough natural oil formed on its surface.
~Chlorine in swimming pools, baths and showers strips away natural oils, and washing with soap removes oils from the skin.

Therefore immediately after washing with soap and/or exposure to chlorinated water, chlorine and soap residue should be removed by applying unrefined coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil all over the skin's surface. That will allow natural oils to be build up on its surface.

It takes about 24 hours for the skin to build up natural oils, so you should plan your sun exposure accordingly. The body needs 24 hours "after proper sun exposure" in order to absorb vitamin D containing oils from the skin surface, so do not use chlorinated water or wash with soap for one (1) day.

These are the reasons I believe it is difficult, to almost impossible, for most people today to get enough vitamin D from sun exposure. Therefore taking cod liver oil is recommended all year, except for those "rare people" who are able to fulfill all of the requirements above." [Bee]

**Cod liver oil is a nutritional supplement derived from liver of cod fish. It has high levels of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, and very high levels of vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin E. It is widely taken to ease the symptoms of arthritis as well as other health benefits.**

Appreciate and Care For Our Children

In this world children are suffering in part from lack of praise and appreciation and positive attention. Think about it--we thank our friends, our clients and strangers, but do we remember to thank/appreciate our children?

Recently I sent a SendOutCards' card to a young man on his 7th birthday--he and his father did a fishing charter and he caught a fish. This picture was taken, and sent to me. I put it, and a couple of others, on a card to memorialize the day, and sent it to him--his grandmother said that he carried it around with him for weeks, but the other gifts were pushed aside or broken within a few days.

Jackson still has that card. I think he keeps it because he felt special and will remember my kindness to him for a long time.

Let's all make an effort to sincerely praise or appreciate or thank a child this week--our future and their futures depend on them being who they are--SPECIAL to US. I believe keeping our children healthy includes many things, quality nutrition, good sleep habits, a strong education and most importantly, helping them feel positive about themselves.

Send a card to someone you love TODAY!

Blessings,
Linda

*Dramatic Autism Statistics

Today we face an ever increasing number of recommended and mandated vaccinations. Let's explore the question together: Do the benefits justify the risks?

Ray Gallup has researched and tracked dramatic autism epidemic statistics:
[] US: 1 in 67 children has Autism [source]
[] US: 1 in 6 children suffers a developmental disorder [source]
[] 84% of children receiving EI services are born in New Jersey [source]
[] UK: 1 in 38 boys has Autism [source]

It costs $3.2 million to take care of an autistic person over his or her lifetime. Caring for all people with autism over their lifetimes costs an estimated $35 billion per year [source]

*Multivitamins Lower Heart Disease Death Risk

Multivitamins taken regularly over a long period of time may lower the risk of death from heart disease by 16 percent, according to a new study at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the University of Washington. The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, also tied daily supplements of vitamin E over a 10-year period to a 28 percent decrease in the risk of death from heart disease.

The new research goes against two older reports, including a much-debated 2004 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine that said multivitamins — and vitamin E in particular — actually increased the risk of “all-cause mortality.” The other previous study, published in 2007 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, said vitamin A, vitamin E, and beta-carotene could increase the risk of death by as much as 16 percent.

The new Washington study found that multivitamins did not decrease the risk of causes of death other than heart disease. It also showed that multivitamins and vitamin E were not linked to an increase in cancer deaths, and that vitamins E and C actually were associated with small decreases in the risk of overall mortality.

The researchers based their findings on questionnaires that more than 77,000 Washington State residents between the ages of 50 and 76 completed. The results were correlated with 10-year use of multivitamins and vitamins C and E, and with death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Roughly 35 percent of the U.S. adult population takes multivitamins regularly, according to a recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

But I can't afford food supplements...

I hear this all the time, so I dug through my files and found this from 1996. I wonder what the stats are for 2009???

We spend...
$12,146,000 on potato chips
$506,000,000 on toys
$6,760,000 on cat food
$9,975,000 on dog food [dogs must eat twice as much]
$35,000,000 on Halloween candy for ONE NIGHT

and...

115,000,000 M&M's are sold [not sure if they are small bags]
19,000,000 people eat at McDonalds
28,315,000 hot dogs are eaten
611,000,000 servings of Coca-Cola are consumed

But ONLY $4,315,000 is spent on vitamins!

[from "Food Supplements No Longer an Option" by Dr. Bruce Miller]

Surely somewhere in our spending there is room for Shaklee Vitalizer.
Healthier living for about $2.90 a day.
Certainly Food For Thought...
